CERTIFIED TRAINING FELLOWSHIP IN NEUROENDOSCOPY
Altering Neurosurgical Education Since 2020

OUR STORY
Since the academic year of 2021, Cairo Greifswald Neurosurgery offers a Certified Training Fellowship in Neuroendoscopy. The programme is hosted by the Departments of Neurosurgery at Cairo University, Egypt, and Greifswald Medical School of the University of Greifswald, Germany. The fellowhip aims to train junior neurosurgeons in the practice of using the endoscope in various neurosurgical procedures.
From the basics of endoscopic surgeries to the high specialty of endoscopic and microscopic approaches in the neurosurgical field, the certified training presents a broad spectrum of theoretical, practical, and technical skills. Besides the focus on Neuroendoscopy, the programme also revises surgical anatomy and pathology. The programme engages as well decision-making practices in various clinical scenarios.
The fellowship trains neurosurgeons in three main aspects of the field of Neurosurgery, namely anatomical and pathological knowledge, technical neurosurgical skills, and versatility. Core to the neurosurgical practice is embodying full knowledge of brain anatomy. Anatomy is the roadmap that neurosurgeons keep in mind when navigating the brain and through hand skills, neurosurgeons navigate physically through the brain. Versatility is thereby central for the navigation to adapt to different clinical cases. The program addresses therefore the know-how to implement the neuroendoscopic option in the management protocol of patients.
In the spirit of theory is doing, the theoretical online lectures by the international faculty are set to practice in the on-site surgical laboratory by the prospective fellows. The training programme follows a blended learning approach ranging from e-learning to hands-on training.
Authorised by both partner Universities, the Certificate upon completion of the programme is as both approved by the Medical Syndicate of Egypt and Germany, as in line with German Education Points (by Ärztekammer MV), assuring the quality of the educational programme. Including professional student exchange between the twinning universities, the fellows also benefit from vivid international network development and opportunities for scientific connection.
PROGRAMÂ OVERVIEW
Online Zoom Webinar
MODULE 1: BASICS IN NEUROENDOSCOPY
-
Duration: 6 weeks
-
Format: 6 Didactic lectures
The first module consists of three main focus points in Neuroscience, namely an overview of the human brain anatomy, the pathology of various brain disorders, and the basics of technical neuroendoscopic approaches.
Besides reviewing the endoscopic anatomy, the webinar engages the status quo of various endoscopic and microscopic approaches and techniques to take samples of tissue from brain tumors or the removal thereof in neurosurgeries. These approaches are explored in relation to various benign, premalignant, and malignant brain tumours, while also considering the diversity of brain lesion types. Apart from brain cancers, the webinar also assesses the current endoscopic approaches to hydrocephalus disease. While outlining the fundamentals of endoscopic surgeries is central to the scope of the fellowship programme, the webinar has also an eye for repair and postoperative care.
Onsite Cairo University, Egypt
MODULE 2: LIVE SURGERY COURSE
-
Duration: 2-3 days
-
Format: Live Surgery Course

The second module observes in-depth various surgical approaches in practice. The candidates attend live surgery sessions as careful observation is key to attaining neurosurgical skills. Observing is a core practice of learning for the candidates to follow the exemplary surgery in precept and practice.
Online Zoom Sessions
MODULE 3: CLINICAL SCENARIOS
-
Duration: 6 weeks
-
Format: Interactive Group Discussions; One-on-one Teaching
The third discussion-based module is committed to decision-making and problem-solving practices of neurosurgeons in various clinical scenarios. The module covers the full spectrum of medical conditions in the neurosurgical specialty in relation to the management protocols of patients. By presenting different case scenarios, the candidates are trained in essential skills necessary to fulfill the core responsibility of patient care.

MODULE 4: CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM
-
Duration: TBD
-
Format: Interactive Group Discussions; One-on-one Teaching

The fourth module presents the challenges and opportunities that present themselves in carving out a career in the field of Neurosurgery. The career development forum engages the advantages and disadvantages and the perks and pitfalls of an international career. The question that drives the forum is how to factor in personality and character in taking up a career in Neurosurgery. Therefore, the discussion-based forum shines a light on the profile of neurosurgeons. Besides medical qualifications, passion and dedication are central to the work. The profession is at the least time-consuming. Intense patient contact also requires a high level of communication skills. The module facilitates networking opportunities while raising awareness of what the profession entails. As an introduction to the profession and the neurosurgical society, the candidates will be presented with first-hand experiences of neurosurgeons. Through brainstorming, the candidates together with the neurosurgical society also discuss the future prospects of personal careers specifically and the neurosurgical field in general.

MODULE 5: HANDS-ON CADAVERIC COURSE
-
Duration: 3 days
-
Format: Hands-On Course
The fifth module addresses a crucial aspect of developing surgical techniques. Focused on hand skills, the cadaveric course is the opportunity to put theory to practice. The hands-on cadaveric dissection is framed within the technical training of the programme.
The handling of the neurosurgical instruments is thereby central.
