PHD EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
2015-2010
OUR STORY
Initially, the academic exchange between the Departments of Neurosurgery at Kasr Alainy School of Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt, and Greifswald Medical School, University of Greifswald, Germany, was represented by individual PhD scholarship fellows. Specifically the German-Egyptian Research Long Term Scholarship Program (GERLS) funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) has laid the foundation for Cairo Greifswald Neurosurgery as known today. Exemplary thereof is the continuous contribution of the fellows Prof. Dr. med. Ehab El Refaee, Dr. med. Ahmad El Damaty, and Dr. Ahmed El Mennebawy to the project.
OUR ACTIVITIES
Within the scope of the exchange programme, the fellows enjoyed the opportunity to internationalise their careers. Prof. Dr. med. Ehab El Refaee was enrolled in the GERLS programme from 2010-2012 and Dr. med. Ahmed Al Damaty from 2013-2015. With a total duration of five years the scientific output of this programme was not only two jointly supervised medical theses, but also the appointment of the coordinator, Prof. Dr. med. Ehab El Refaee. The coordinator serves as an academic and research liaison between the two medical institutes in Germany and Egypt, responsible to uphold the bridge of knowledge transfer in research and clinical work. Dr. Ahmed El Mennebawy and alumnus of Cairo University is currently a permanent resident at Greifswald Medical School, completing his PhD.
