UNDERGADUATE SUMMER SCHOOL

Cairo Greifswald Neurosurgery

Join the highlight of the summer for undergraduate medical students at the Cairo Greifswald Neurosurgery Summer School. Discover the medical field of Neurosurgery in search of a specialisation. Based on multiple years of professional experience in organizing a “Career Development Forum”, Cairo Greifswald Neurosurgery launched a Summer School programme dedicated to warming up students for the practice of Neurosurgery. The programme is hosted by the Departments of Neurosurgery at Cairo University, Egypt, and University Medicine Greifswald, Germany. The programme is held under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Karlhans Endlich, Dean of Medicine at the Greifswald Medical School, and Prof. Dr. Husam Salah Mourad, Dean of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of Cairo University.
This orientation programme includes multiple activities ranging from live surgery sessions, visits to clinical facilities, lectures to library tours and other cultural activities. Besides the programme’s engagement with the fundamentals of the Neurosurgery practice, the Summer School also highlights the advantages and disadvantages, challenges and opportunities, perks and pitfalls of the practice.
Aware of medical students’ responsibility to be well-informed in choosing a specialty, the programme allows for the participants to envision their future as a prospective neurosurgeon. Based on the firm belief that the choice for a speciality should however not entail a loss of contact with other medical disciplines, the programme highlights the importance of interdisciplinarity.  Along with providing an introduction to the profession, the setting of the summer school encourages as well intergenerational and cross-cultural exchange.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

The programme is conducted at the Department of Neurosurgery, with optional interdisciplinary visits to the Departments of Trauma, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and Obstetrics/ Gynecology based upon availability.

MODULE 1: PREPARATORY ORIENTATION COURSE

  • Duration: 1 month

  • Format: 4 weekly didactic lectures

  • Venue: Online

The first module immerses the third-year undergraduate medical students in the fundamentals of Neurosurgery. A particular focus of the webinar is to offer an orientation to the profession regarding neurosurgical expertise, training, and specialties. The qualifications and requirements for the specialties of Neurosurgery are highlighted and overviewed in this module.

MODULE 2: PREPARATORY LIVE SURGERY COURSE

  • Duration: TBD

  • Format: live surgery course, interactive seminars

  • Venue: Cairo University, Egypt

Core to the specialty of Neurosurgery is self-evidently the practice of surgeries. The second module gives undergraduate medical students the opportunity to attend live surgery sessions. This course gives an insight into the everyday working space of neurosurgeons. The course nurtures familiarity with operation rooms for the students and furthermore offers a learning experience by the means of observation. The module also includes interactive seminars in small groups in order to provide a platform for intergenerational dialogues.

MODULE 3: SUMMER SCHOOL

  • Duration: 1 week

  • Format: clinical, didactic, and cultural activities

  • Venue: University of Greifswald, Germany

Through a university visit to the Greifswald Medical School, the students gain an international experience of medical facilities and education. Through the cross-cultural exchange, the programme aims to intensify internationalisation and interdisciplinarity in the field of Neurosurgery. Library tours, visits to clinics, and didactic lectures by international faculty are therefore intrinsic to the summer school’s scope to facilitate network development and scientific connection.
